Approximately 10 to 15 million years ago, during the Miocene Epoch, large parts of the earth held deposits of enormous amounts of dead plants and micro-organisms.
 
During the course of evolution, these organic deposits were covered by different soil and rock strata, which were subsequently hermetically sealed. The protein and fat elements gradually decomposed and turned into hydrocarbons, which, under the influence of heat and pressure, were distilled into petroleum.
 
Today, geologists research the structure of the earth in order to systematically find and access what is still the single most important source of energy: petroleum, which is a raw material for many heating fuels, engine fuels, and other materials. Our daily existence would hardly continue without it.
